Being in charge of changes in ones life is a theme commonly expressed by Back to Health Wellness Center. We've introduced a variety of services and memberships which work towards more balance in all aspects of our patients lives.

ReConnect Your Health Therapy: Are you a Lefty, Righty, or have you achieved a whole-brain state?
  • Often, one side of the brain may be doing the lions share of the work when it comes to processing information, completing tasks, and engaging in critical thinking.
  • Inefficient communication between the body and brain via the nervous system can effect the how the persons body works and processes stress.
  • When communication is bridged between the right and left hemispheres of the brain, it promotes optimal brain function, better healing, and emotional balance.
The ReConnect System is a powerful, yet safe tool that uses a unique pulse pattern that coaxes the left and right sides of your brain to communicate.
When you ReConnect:
  • You will be able to focus on a specific type of healing such as points of pain, emotional release, and improvement of systemic function.
  • Each session is relaxing and only takes about five minutes.
Call the office @ 970-257-9199 for a complementary session to see what The ReConnect System can do for you.

How Do I Know When I Should Be Purchasing A New Mattress?

Chiropractor, Grand Junction, CO - Daniel Lonquist, DC, CCST, CCWP Certified Chiropractic Wellness Practitioner. Back To Health Wellness Center, 970-257-9199 Google Places

If you’re not sleeping well, it could be your mattress.  But how do you know when you should be looking to purchase a new one?  As we age, it is easy to blame our lack of sleep, or sleep related pain on just getting older.  What signs should you be looking for that indicate that your mattress is no longer providing the needs your body requires to get a full night’s rest?

For starters, it is important to point out that our body really requires two distinct, yet opposite needs.  First is spinal alignment.  We need a mattress that is going to be firm enough to keep our back in a straight line as we sleep.  If our mattress begins to sag, our hips will sink in more and we may wake up with a sore back. This is very common especially under the hip area, because that is where the majority of our weight is placed on a mattress.  Even if you rotate your mattress, the hips still are in the middle of the bed, so where the hips rest will tend to wear out first.  Many will notice that if they move to the center of the mattress, or over to the edges, that the mattress is quite a bit firmer than where one normally sleeps.
The other need we have to meet is pressure relief for our hips and shoulders.  If you sleep on your side, the hip bone and the shoulder are the two primary contact points with the mattress.  While we need a firm bed for our backs, we also need some cushioning to make the bed comfortable to sleep on.  Most mattresses use various types of foams to provide this comfort. This soft layer is usually where most mattresses wear out first.  In order to make a mattress comfortable enough for you to purchase when you are in a mattress store, the mattress manufacturers will use different combinations of foams that feel good while trying them in the store, but foams, particularly soft foams, will wear out quickly which will allow your hips and shoulder to bottom out on the firmer surfaces below.  Even the most durable types of foams tend to soften significantly as they are used.  Durability testing shows that even Latex, which is commonly regarded in the mattress industry as one of the most durable cushioning materials softens 22%!  Memory foam was found to soften around 16%, and polyurethane foam, the foam found in most pillow-top style mattresses, was found to soften 49%.  What is even more striking is that fact that most of the softening takes place in the first year of use.  This is why if you look in the fine print of mattress warranties, you will find that manufacturers don’t cover the softening of a mattress.
If your mattress is worn out, what should you look for when purchasing a new mattress?  Optimally, you will find something that provides a firm surface that gives the alignment your spine needs, in combination with the pressure relief that the hips and shoulders need.  Furthermore, these materials should be very durable.  If you are looking for a mattress and are only concerned about the alignment of your spine, or prefer a very firm mattress, a high end innerspring may be the solution for you.  However, you should avoid a mattress that uses pocketed coils as a support layer, or has any foam used as cushioning on the top, as these mattresses will not be aligning for the back.
Most, however, need some pressure relief.  A good alternative to foam mattresses is a new mattress that uses a gel material called Intelli-Gel that has been used in hospitals for years to provide relief to burn patients and long-term care facilities because of its ability to cure even the worst types of bed sores.  Intelli-Gel mattresses have recently been made available to the general public in IntelliBED mattresses.  This material has been found to soften less than 5% over the life of the bed, less than a third of the very best foam, and ten times less than the most common foams used in mattresses.  Furthermore, it has been designed to maintain the alignment of the back, and provides more pressure relief than any other mattress.
If you wake up and you’re sore, take the time to check to make sure your mattress is meeting your needs when it comes to getting a good night’s rest.  When it comes down to purchasing a mattress, make sure your bed gives you the right alignment, sufficient pressure relief, and won’t soften too quickly.
This office has taken the time to research the major mattress retail products and has identified intelliBED as the first true medical-grade sleep surface available for home use. By using co-polymer intelli-Gel® in place of foam,  intelliBED's provide superior comfort and support without harmful off-gassing and they wear 2-3 times better than any of the foam mattresses.  Deep, healing sleep is fundamental to your health. If you have questions about the quality of your sleep or what sleep surface and pillow is best for you, ask me. I can help!

4 Ways to Get the Most Out of Your Chiropractic Care

Chiropractor, Grand Junction, CO - Daniel Lonquist, DC, CCST, CCWP Certified Chiropractic Wellness Practitioner. Back To Health Wellness Center, 970-257-9199 Google Places

The difference many of our patients experience between the time when they enter our doors and leave our office can be quite significant.  We offer the same advice whether you’re a regular patient coming because you slept wrong, or if you’ve never seen a chiropractor before.

Regular care is preventative medicine.  The human body is an organic machine, and like all machines, it requires regular tune-ups to run at its optimal level.  A chiropractor will usually treat in two phases.  The first corrects misalignment in the spine.  In this phase the body is retraining the muscles that support the spine, as well as, improving acute symptoms such as neck or low back pain, while bolstering immune and nervous system function.  The second phase works like regular dental check-ups or an oil change every 3000 miles.  Keeping on track with chiropractic care can prevent the body from reverting to improper neurological patterns, and can lessen the effect of new injuries while also cutting down recovery time.

Drink water.  In the first six weeks of your initial care, you should be drinking at least 64 oz of water per day.  Water is the key component of life on this planet, and is vital on the most basic cellular level of body function.

Stay Active. Even if you are being treated for a specific injury, movement is a good thing!  A chiropractor will furnish you with exercises and stretches that will assist in your recovery.  Take advantage of your increased range of motion, and get out and enjoy the day.

Instances do arise when inflammation from an adjustment will cause discomfort.  Muscle discomfort or tenderness after an adjustment can be soothed by icing.  Remember ice is nice!  20 minutes on, an hour off and never apply ice directly to the skin.  Omega-3 fatty acids such as those found in high quality fish oils can reduce inflammation and assist in cellular functioning.  Avoiding foods that contain sugar, gluten, and dairy can also control the body’s inflammatory response.

Be sure to inform your chiropractor about improvements, changes in your condition, or questions about your treatment.  Active participation while receiving care will get you the best results by far!

Bicycling and Chiropractic

If you didn’t know, May was National Bicycle Month.  We have more than our fair share of people who cycle as their main source of transportation, or bike to get out and enjoy the warmer days of spring.  Chiropractic care is an excellent tool to keep you pain free while cruising around town, along the river trail, or just through your neighborhood.

85% of recreational cyclists will develop some form of overuse injury!  Chronic stiff neck and shoulders or knee pain can take the joy out of a Sunday afternoon joy-ride with your children.  Chiropractors can identify the areas where strain most commonly occurs in your body while doing an activity such as cycling.  They will recommend stretches and exercises that take strain off of those stressed areas to allow your body to function at a higher level than before.

Chiropractic adjustments also support healthy nerve impulse transmissions to all areas of your body by removing interference caused by subluxation, or misalignment of the bones that make up your spine which can cut off the messages your nerves wish to send throughout your body.  When the nerves that supply your heart, lungs, or muscles are working more efficiently, it means that you may be able to ride longer, thus getting more out of your experience.  Adjustments are also beneficial in increasing range of motion, are great for natural pain relief, and shorten the time between injury and getting active again.

Should Athletes Get Chiropractic Care?

Chiropractor, Grand Junction, CO - Daniel Lonquist, DC, CCST, CCWP Certified Chiropractic Wellness Practitioner. Back To Health Wellness Center, 970-257-9199 Google Places

By: Dr. Daniel Lonquist

Athletes often represent the peak of physical performance.  They continuously stretch the boundary of what is possible with hard work and perseverance.  It is easy to imagine the human body with its many interlocking systems designed to work as a complex organic machine.  As is the case for all machinery, maintenance is required to keep things running smoothly and at optimal function.  The link between a healthy spine and a healthy body has persuaded many athletes to embrace regular chiropractic care as an integral part of their fitness regimen.

In terms of fostering a superior athlete, chiropractic care goes much further than pain management.  It is true that regular adjustments reduce the time it takes to heal after an injury, and decreases the severity of injury, but the ultimate goal of chiropractic care is to allow the nervous system, to communicate to all the systems that comprise the body with out interference.

How does this relate to athletic performance? One of the many goals of chiropractic adjustments is to remove interference in nervous system communication. Since the nervous system is the master controller for the function and regulation of every cell, tissue and organ of the body it is logical that in order to perform optimally you must not have interference in this communication. This is important for proper training and can enable competitors to not only engage more muscles at deeper levels and create more definition, but also to balance the body to create better symmetry. In the case of bodybuilding, definition and symmetry of course are major factors when it comes to judging and you need every edge you can get if you want to win.

You don't have to look hard to find testimonials of professional athletes that claim they would not have performed as well as they did without chiropractic.

"Bodybuilders and fitness people have been using chiropractic very extensively in order to stay healthy and fit. I found it was better to go to a chiropractor before you get injured. We are a perfect team- the world of fitness and the world of chiropractors." Arnold Schwarzenegger

“I do believe in chiropractic.  I found that going to my chiropractor three times a week helps my performance.  Once I drove 20 miles to see a chiropractor before a fight.  I have to have my adjustments before I go into the ring.  The majority of boxers go to get the edge.” Evander Holyfield

“I’ve been seeing a chiropractor and he’s really been helping me out a lot.  Chiropractic’s been a big part of my game.  Chiropractic care works for me.  I only wish I had tried chiropractic a few years ago when I first started having back pain and maybe the surgery would have never happened.” Joe Montana

“I’ve been going to chiropractors for as long as I can remember.  It’s as important to my training as practicing my swing.” Tiger Woods

"I don't know how much I could improve until I started seeing a chiropractor. Since I've been in chiropractic, I've improved by leaps and bounds both mentally and physically." Michael Jordan

“You obviously can’t compete at your fullest if you’re not in alignment.  And your body can’t heal if your back is not in alignment.  It was the holistic idea that I like about chiropractic and that is what track and field is about.  Every track and field athlete that I have ever met has seen a chiropractor at one time or another.  In track and field, it is absolutely essential.  I think I compete eight to ten percent better from regular chiropractic use.  I think that is how much of a benefit it is, if not more!” Dan O’Brien

“When you’re out there and you’re not feeling the pain, you’re obviously going to be a better player.” Barry Bonds

John Stockton, Doug Smith, a sports reporter for the Toronto Star, recently noted in his column that Stockton, 40, the oldest player in the NBA, believes the greatest reason he’s still able to complete is the care he receives from the team chiropractor, “It’s been great for me and for my family,” he told the Toronto Star.
